Why are times tables so important?
- Times tables and division facts are essential building block in maths.
- Speed AND accuracy are important – the more facts your child remembers, the easier it is for them to do harder calculations, particularly under time pressure.
- These calculations form the basis of much of what they learn in maths such as division, algebra and fractions.
- Knowing such a key skill gives children confidence.

What is the purpose of the Multiplication Tables Check?
- The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether Year 4 pupils can fluently recall their multiplication tables. This means being able to answer times tables questions accurately and quickly, without having to work out the answers.
- Children are expected to be confident in all multiplication tables up to 12x12 by the end of Year 4.
|
Who will take the Multiplication Tables Check?
- It will be taken by children in Year 4, in the summer term (in June).
- In June 2022 it will become compulsory for all English schools.
|
How will children be tested?
- Children will be tested using an on-screen check, where they will have to answer multiplication questions against the clock on a computer.
- They will be presented with 25 questions and will get 6 seconds from the time the question appears to input their answer.
- The check has been designed to focus on times tables that fit within the KS2 curriculum.
- The 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables are more likely to be asked than the 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 or 11 multiplication tables.

Results
- School and individual pupil-level reports will be made available to schools. This will mean that schools can target support and intervention where needed.
